Crashing while actively scanning

John | Last updated: Jun 13, 2019 08:20AM UTC

Hello, I've noticed that when I try to spider websites of a large nature (thousands of requests, multiple forms, 1,000,000,000 + bytes) burp suite will crash and then no longer reopen with restarting my machine. I am currently running kali linux 2019 from a live usb when it crashes, on my mac. Thank you, Connor

Which version of Burp are you using? Do you have performance feedback enabled (User options > Misc > Performance feedback)? If so, could you provide us with your diagnostics (Help > Diagnostics)?

Hi there, I'm also having some trouble using burp pro 2.1.07. Starting it via cmd.exe -java -Xmx2g -jar XXXX.jar When I perform an active scan, maybe 1/2 through Burp just becomes unresponsive and crashes. I do have Performance Feedback enabled, and my debug ID was a9z5rc0lzui6vkpwnam0:68gp. I had to copy and paste as Burp locked up and I couldn't send.

And one more debug ID a9z5rc0lzui6vkpwnam0:67h1

Hi Jarad, The stack trace on your Burp instance is detailing some issues with the Upload Scanner extension. Are you able to unload this and rerun the scan to see if it progresses any further. Out of interest, does this behavior occur on every scan or have you just observed it during your current scan?

Strangely enough, I was able to run the *same* scans with the *same* extension on another computer (with less RAM etc) and it did not crash at all. This behavior was being observed with every scan I'm running on this computer. I'm now starting to think it's something with the computer somehow, though I'm on the latest Java version, with tons of RAM and disk space. Not sure what's going on.

Hi Jarad, Actually, from the debug information it looks as though your version of Burp is running using the Oracle 1.8.0_231 version of Java. Do you have access to the installable version of Burp? It would be interesting to see if the same behavior persists when using the bundled version of Java. In addition, does that machine that does work have the same setup (aside from the RAM)?
