Warren, could you send a screenshot of the error message to support@portswigger.net? Thanks.

Does your system have a GUI, if so, could you run the health check? If not, your environment needs to have the basic X libraries for Burp to function in headless mode. If you're still having a problem can you tell us the exact version of Fedora.

Yes - the system has a GUI. Fedora release 29

Are you able to run the embedded browser health check? Use the Burp menu > Embedded browser health check.

Just to clarify, you're unable to run Burp as a GUI/Desktop app?

on fedora, BURP UI doesn't launch. so not sure what you mean by 'just to clarify'. it doesn't launch, so not sure how i can access the 'burp menu' from the application that doesn't launch.

Sorry Warren, I had thought you were able to run Burp in the GUI but not from the command line. Can you confirm that your environment has the basic X libraries installed? - http://blog.mclaughlinsoftware.com/2015/06/09/fedora-x11-install/
